Quarr Abbey will be hosting a Summer Show, featuring a collection of unique and distinctive handmade, hand-carved studio ceramics and complementary textured wall art by Island artist Andrew Dowden. This is an opportunity to view Andrew’s work and buy directly from the artist. Quarr Abbey, a registered charity, will receive a percentage of all exhibition sales. Ideas and designs for his ceramic work come from various sources including nature, architecture and archaeology. ‘Pottery has been made on the Island since Neolithic times,’ says Andrew. ‘Learning about pottery and actually working through the different stages of each making process, has made me appreciate this ancient art form.’ Andrew was inspired to take up ceramics whilst researching a book on Isle of Wight pottery. ‘I primarily make pieces for my own interest and satisfaction but it pleases me to know that people who buy my work also appreciate it.’  Surface texture and form are Andrew’s main interest, and textured designs have also been incorporated into his oil-painted wall art. A carpenter for 20 years, Andrew constructed the teak frames from recycled materials.Andrew will be in attendance throughout the exhibition and will be happy to chat with visitors about his work. Quarr Abbey Art Gallery will be open from 10am-5pm each day. Admission is free to the exhibiton, the Abbey and grounds.

On the coldest day imaginable which came out of nowhere only the most dedicated and hardy of sorts derived anything from what should have been a wonderful event. It was an exercise in steadfast British cheerfulness which most of us managed to maintain throughout the day. Although the weather may have let us down, there is no denying the hard work and dedication of the organisers and everyone is grateful to them for pulling out the stops on such a miserable day.

However, sufficient funds were raised to support Oliver’s Travels in the quest to visit every Teenage Cancer Hospital in the Country, some of which will be done this year and the remainder if the Spring. Ollie is sending regular updates to The Fishbourne where they are on display.

An open forum was held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on Tuesday, November 24th at 7 pm.  This was to discuss the Wightlink planning application to ready the terminal for new, larger boats.  More than 40 people took the opportunity to have their say.  The chief concerns raised were the access to the terminal, an increase in the volume of traffic causing more congestion and noise.

Well done to everyone who contributed to the success of this very special party. The generosity of all concerned means that the cost of the new seat has been met in full with enough left over to make two £500 donations to charity and have a surplus to cover the start up of the next big event.
